Every professional is a brand in himself. At the start of a career, this brand has very low exposure and recognition but as he gets experienced in the profession along with other personal marketing actives, this brand starts to get popular.

Job hunt is more like any conventional marketing where you market yourself to sell yourself. Just as in conventional marketing, there are pull and push approaches to market a product, the same goes in with your job hunting process. All those pursuing a job follow either of it intentionally or unintentionally. It is important to understand these two approaches to have a better shot at your professional objectives as both of these approaches have different applications in different scenarios.

The Push Approach: Just like pushing a product into a market, you follow a push approach when you proactively search for jobs by approaching different employers and job opportunities. This is more of a hardcore job hunting process – although applied and followed on jobs at all levels – but is more common in junior and mid level jobs. Push approach is usually followed by professionals who are not, at the moment, a big brand in the professional circle. And so they proactively hunt for opportunities by contacting, convincing and demonstrating their skills and abilities to employers

The Pull Approach: Pull approach is when employers themselves pick you up for an opportunity in the organization. This happens when you are a big brand with good reputation, exposure and popularity within your professional network; in short, people with strong personal marketing. Not limited to, but pull approach is usually followed on senior and executive positions. These are reactive job opportunities that usually brings in good compensation and benefits to attract you – since you may not be in job switch scenario.

The concept of push and pull approaches define us the important of our professional branding. Those with good professional branding are more exposed to reactive working opportunities and so every professional should pay some efforts in his/her professional branding. Although how to do professional branding is not in the scope of this discussion, but briefly highlighting, personal indirect marketing, keeping in touch professionally, consultations, networking discussions are some of the ways through which you can start creating your professional brand. Social networking platforms today play a very important role in creating your professional brand not limited to your segment group but globally.
